In this reflection, I want you to take a moment to discuss what you learned through the process of having creative control over your own project: you came up with a new argument, a new genre, and a new audience based upon your first main assignment. What are some pros/cons to this process for you as a writer--I'm not looking for whatever you liked the process but rather what you learned about yourself as a writer. Try and think past ideas such as waiting to long to start, issues with programs you might have been working in, the time crunch to finish, etc. I really want you to reflect upon you and your identity as a writer and what, through this process, you might have learned about yourself.
Shoot for 250-400 words.
**We will do this in class on Tuesday!
I have learned that I really enjoy creating these types of videos. And as my Theory of writing is going, audience is the most important part to me, so I realize now that the point of my project was to reach out to as many audiences as possible by writing in as many genres as I could manage. The pro's were that it was fun, it was something I enjoyed doing, and it is something that I feel like I'm good at doing. The con's were simply the deadlines. Time management was a big issue because I was gone the weekend to work on it as well as part of the day it was due. I learned from this that if I can relate something to music, it will go quite a bit smoother for me. I am not necessarily an academic writer. Honestly, I am simply a musician. Whatever writing qualities come with that are the writing qualities I possess. Another pro is not working in a purely academic standing and being able to add the utmost personal voice I possibly can to a piece. That's what I really enjoy and through the different medium or music, I feel as if I can do that very well. The process wasn't anything new or difficult to me, but I did like that we could take the theme from our other paper and apply it in a different way. Great fun for a creative outlet indeed!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I have never been a truly creative person when it comes to projects, I learned through this project that switching genres is a lot easier than coming up with a topic completely. It helped already knowing about the topic that this assignment was over because I had previously done most of the research that I needed to do. Some pros of this project are the fact that we were using the same basic topic, but with a change in argument and genre, the fact that there were no true specifications, and that we had freedom to roam. The cons of this project for me is my lack of creativity when it comes to projects, and the fact that it was open, thus making imagination come into play. Throughout writing this assignment, the main thing I would say I learned is genre switch, and the fact that depending on what genre one uses, there are different aspects that must be included to reach the correct audience. In the beginning of the year, I believed that genre was strictly the category a piece of work is placed into. After completing this project I now have a better understanding of genre and how it affects the piece as a whole, and helps a lot when determining ones audience. Another thing I gained from this project was reflection, and looking back over a piece. Through writing a rationale, it really made me go back and think about why I made the decisions that I made. The rationale also helped me fine-tune my project and make sure it turned out the way I wanted it to. As far as learning about myself goes, I figured out that all though I like to procrastinate, it is much easier to start a bit early and be done a bit early.
ReplyDeleteThis project I think did give me a chance to show who I am as a writer because of the creative control that it provided. With my writing, I tend to do better with assignments that I consider to be fun and are loosely lined out for me. I like being able to decide to write about whatever I want to and have no limitations, and that is where my best ideas come from. It is when I have a more formal or strict assignment that I have difficulties thinking about what to do it on. This project, although I was ultimately unable to produce the final product that I envisioned, did allow me such creativity, but more importantly I think the opptrotunity to choose my audience and how I wanted to convey my argument to them showed me that I have more of an understanding of audience than I previously thought I did. I think that I was able to produce something that was effective and appropriate for my intended audience, and that is not something I would have considered myself able to do before.
ReplyDeleteSince main assignment #1 was one that I thought was very difficult for me personally, this second chance at it provided me with the knowledge that as a writer, sometimes not every piece you produce is going to be what you want it to be, but when looking at it in a new way it can help you make sense of what you are doing and maybe even help you create a better final product. I think that if I had thought about the paper in a different medium to begin with, I might have had an easier time realizing what I wanted to write about, so that is a strategy I might use on future assignments if I’m having similar problems.
This assignment gave me an opportunity to really test my creativity and push myself. I’m not exactly the artistic type and I typically wouldn’t choose a genre where I’m putting a video together and putting text over it to explain it. But with this assignment, even though I had the opportunity to choose a print assignment, I wanted to push myself and see what I could do. I wanted to see if I could get my ideas across in a creative way that was interesting and enticing enough to other people so that they would want to watch it and easy enough to understand that everybody would have a certain level of comprehension after seeing my work. Having creative control over the assignment was a helpful experience. I think that I had the revelation that choosing an audience and genre went hand in hand, especially now a days. If I had wanted to stick with a more academic audience I could have written an article for the New York Times or if, like I did, I wanted to appeal to a younger generation of multimedia addicts then I could make a movie that would appeal to them. The only con I think for me was overcoming the initial thoughts of feeling directionless at first. Very rarely do we as students have the ability to choose what we want to not only write about, but create genre wise and it was a good learning experience.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot from making a formal piece of writing into a creative piece of writing. I took my movie, The Help, and took the big concept of degrading women. I took it so like songs, advertisements, men and movie stars all affect the concept of degrading women. I made it a magazine article because I think that women read a lot of magazines and it would inform them on how much women actually get degraded. Some pros of me as a writer are that I feel like I can connect with a magazine audience very well. I like to read them and I feel like I can definitely connect to that audience how I write. Also I think I took the concept of this project very well. I tried and use my main concept as degrading women and kind of changed it to the media degrading women. Some things I learned about my self as a writer is that I have a lot to say but I cannot get it all down on paper. I think I got my argument down and I think I organized it at the end but I definitely had to work to get to there. I have learned about myself that I can be a creative writer as well as a informative writer. I was kind of nervous to inform people in this piece, but I think a lot of females enjoy reading those types of things because they are entertaining. I think I made this piece entertaining and informative so I think I have grown as a writer a lot when I did this project.
ReplyDeleteThis project was more difficult in my eyes because the genre was up to us. Any genre, and that’s basically anything we want to do in order to show our argument. My issue with this was coming up with an idea that was realistic for me to produce. I wanted to do a video, and have the concept that everyone is a dancer, so stereotypes are generalizing the entire population, but I didn’t really know how to go about that. It wasn’t until last night I decided to us popular videos on You Tube to educate society. The cons were definitely resources. Here you can’t have everything you need and space is limited, but that also bent everyone’s creativity in my eyes. As a writer it’s a little harder for me to think about how this helped me. I think the biggest thing I got out of this project was the fact I have to please the audience in a new way. The audience needed to be taught something and held on while looking at the project. My audience is the public, so it had to relate but not through common language only. I had to create my video with structure, wording, audio and video content that was all relatable to all ages and genders. It was difficult, but through watching You Tube videos, I could see what was popular and what really attracted people.
ReplyDeleteStill, for me this was a creativity test. I’m not sure it’s my 100% best work due to my resources and lack of ideas…but I think to take an idea and put it in a new genre is a great skill. This is the same as taking a paper and having to write an article out of it. Yes it is still writing, but the genre is different making the approach very different. This has opened my views up at approaching audiences differently as well as establishing ethos in a new way. Writing credibility can come from sources and interviews, etc., but establishing ethos with a video is much different. It’s all about relativity and whether or not the public is interested, no matter what the message may be. Makes me think working in television must be like hell.
Throughout the process of having creative control over my project, I was able to be innovative. I learned a lot about not only myself as a writer, but about the writing process in general. I learned to adapt because I ended up not doing my initial plan. At the moment, it was somewhat stressful to have to change something that I thought was going to go so well, but now I’m glad I did it. Throughout the process, I learned that I, as a writer, able to adapt more than I thought I would ever be able tonight. I was able to take all of the thoughts in my head and put them to creative use. It was fun because it reminded me of my high school English classes. My teachers would have us do art assignments in addition to normal literary analysis. It is a good alternative for student who wishes to use their creativity. I like being creative, but it is the not the easiest for me. A pro for the assignment would be that I really got to analyze the part of my first essay that interested me the most. It was nice to be able to choose my focus, rather than having to meet an assortment of items. It was nice too, because even though it was somewhat unstructured it also had requirements. I do very well with organization, and it really helped me to formulate my project. If I am doing something creative and don’t know whether or not I’m actually doing it right it is difficult for me. Overall, the assignment was fun because it was a little more personalized and fun. At the same time it still did accomplish something.
ReplyDeleteI have learned that I knew the importance of social network and rediscovered social network. The major difference between my main assignment #1 and main assignment #2 is audience. Because the audience significantly shifted, I realized the audience is very important to me. The audience is weighed a lot on the genre. Even though the audience just change a litter bit, the genre must have lots of changes. Moreover, although the mean idea of the main assignment #2 changed slightly, I can easily changed the genre to cater the new audience. I am very enjoy doing something I really good at and interesting. This is the advantage of finishing this project. The disadvantage of doing this project is that I spending too much time on this assignment. I am not saying that spending too much time on the assignment is not a good thing, but spending too much time on the assignment in a very short time. It is really intensive and affects my assignment quality, which is a small pity of this WRIT class. I am a “science person.” The writing process of mine is always the same, from I understand rhetorical situation and rhetorical analyze to now. My process is analyzing my rhetorical situation--- determining the audience and genre--- using credibility, emotion and logical persuasion to make my essay making sense--- proofreading my essay and revising. A great improvement I have is the improvement in my grammar and syntax mistakes. Every time I checking my essay, I always find several same kinds of mistakes. After checking the essay, my essay became more beautiful, because the grammar and syntax mistakes were fewer.
